Using the GPU FX Window in Edius 5
Edius 5 has recently been released, but the newer version comes with many features that the previous versions lacked. This includes the SD/HD mixing via the timeline, key-framing with 3D, and the ability to easily add transitions and titles. And, all of this is done with the new GPU (graphics processing units) FX window. While beginners should be able to use this tool, this is geared more towards advanced users.
Step 1: GPU FX Setup
Like most video editing programs, the standard set up for the main screen is that the image being rendered is located on the right, and the effects being added are on the right. The timeline is below all of this.
When the GPU FX window is opened, however, it shows up in the center of the screen, allowing users to easily see all the available effects. Further, these settings will give the user nearly complete control over how frames are keyed and how the effects look on the screen. This is done via sliders, which can increase or decrease the effect based on what the user needs done.
Step 2: Using the GPU FX
While Edius 5 has always had the ability to manipulate aspect ratios, frames and the resolution of images and clips, the new version just does it better and faster. All the effects are done in real-time, meaning that the effects do not need to be rendered before the user can see how these effects look on the screen.
And, this real-time viewing can be done with nearly all types of effect, including 2D and 3D effects. This is rather surprising since 3D effects almost always have to be rendered because of their larger size. The real-time viewing of effects is now done in the YUV color space, which is part of the color image pipeline. And, this means that the new system will eliminate problems within the CPU pipeline.
Besides the previously mentioned features, the GPU FX tool also comes with 22 transition groups, increasing the number of available transitions. Plus, it has tons of presets, allowing users to quickly choose from commonly used effects and actions; this will greatly increase efficiency
